After signing a player, how about you have a 2-day window where you can alter a signed free agent's contract PROVIDED that the total amount in the contract at least stays the same. After the alteration, the player does NOT re-enter the bidding pool.
Example, not that I want to do this or anything, but say I decided I wanted Jacoby Ford for 4 seasons instead of 1 but I won the bidding with a 1yr $50,000 deal. As it stands, I would need to have re-offered the 4yr deal while he's a free agent, which would have restarted his 24-hour clock and the rest of the teams might decide "oh yeah, Jacoby Ford" even though I was about to 'win' him for only $50k.
The proposal would mean I have until 12:00PM on Sunday to rework the deal.

Interesting suggestion, but once you sign the player, you will be able to re-negotiate with that player after their contract exprires. If you wanted Jacoby Ford for 4 years, you should have offered him 4 years, that goes for all players.

That's true for re-signing but the pay scale (probably) makes it extremely advantageous to sign players for their market value.
If I actually had Jacoby Ford sitting in my office right now, and I said to him, "You're under contract for $50k for one year. I can offer you $50k a year for four years, but you have to sign it right now and you can't shop the offer around. Deal?" Given that total contract dollars is the deciding factor for FA bidding, technically Jacoby Ford 'wants' the better deal. But since I don't want to risk opening the bidding up, I will not go through the process of releasing him from his deal and re-offering the contract since it's too risky. So neither the Boondock Saints nor Jacoby Ford get what they want.
